Our Mission

Hawaii Literacy's mission is to empower Hawaii’s children and adults with essential reading, writing, and lifelong learning skills.

1 in 6 Adults in Hawaii Struggle with Reading and Writing

Our Vision

We believe that literacy is at the core of having the opportunity for a better life and that it is never too late for an adult to learn to read and write. We believe well-trained and dedicated volunteers can successfully teach adults to read and write. We believe that parents are their children's first and best teachers and that family support can help any parent, regardless of literacy level, help their child succeed. We believe that greater literacy builds stronger families and communities.

Hawaii Literacy's five programs - Adult Literacy, Bookmobile, English Language Learner, Digital Literacy, and Family Literacy Libraries, focus on those with the lowest literacy skills and help disadvantaged children prepare for and succeed in school, give adults a second chance to learn to read and write and train hundreds of literacy volunteers to teach in our communities. We provide books, mentors, literacy promotion, and the skills needed to break cycles of poverty and under-education.
