1 in 6 Adults in Hawaii Struggle with Reading and Writing

Hawaii Literacy's five programs - Adult Literacy, Bookmobile, English Language Learner, Family Literacy Libraries, and Digital Literacy focus on those with the lowest literacy skills and help underserved children prepare for and succeed in school, give adults a second chance to learn to read and write, and train hundreds of literacy volunteers to teach in our communities. We provide books, mentors, literacy promotion, and the skills needed to achieve life goals.

Our sincerest THANK YOU to Nareit Hawaii for your support. Our Digital Literacy Program offers assistance to those in the communities we serve, through learning basic computer skills and to strengthen skills for work force development.

I have had the pleasure of volunteering for Hawaii Literacy for about a month or so now. I joined in order to get more real-world experience as part of my ongoing TEFL certification course, but I am having such a fulfilling time that I hope to remain as a volunteer well after I have met the required hours of class observation that my TEFL course has asked of me. The two teachers I have observed, Law and Annabelle, are both extremely passionate and professional about their work. The classes are very organized and well-structured, and it is obvious that the students enjoy their time here immensely. I have learned so much more in my short time as a volunteer than I ever thought possible, and I feel so much more confident about entering into this career field than I did prior to this experience. I am very grateful for the tips and advice that the teachers have given me, and for the Hawaii Literacy program for being so kind as to allow me this opportunity.
