We are happy to say we met, and even exceeded our fundraising goal for the event, and raised funds to help continue our Adult and Family Literacy programs through the year. We couldn’t do it without you!

Thanks to many generous gifts from businesses,foundations,and individuals, Hawaii Literacy has met our grant challenge from the GIFT Foundation of Hawai’i to raise $32,000 to build three terrific new programs– Literacy & Technology, Youth Tutoring, and Parents Achieving Literacy– and help hundreds of `ohana most in need.

Finding Our `Ohana, a new children’s book by Jerilyn Ito, shares the story of two children in Hawai`i searching for `ohana and a place to call home, and helps keiki to think about and appreciate all they have in their own lives.

The Bookmobile is Back!

Hawaii Literacy’s new Bookmobile was officially welcomed at a blessing at ‘Ohana Ola O Kahumana on November 10, and resumed service to seven sites on the Waianae Coast. Last April, the Bookmobile program had to stop service due to irreparable maintenance issues, but thanks to the generosity of The Harry & Nee Chang Wong Foundation, a much-needed brand new custom Bookmobile is again bringing books and literacy activities to excited keiki and ‘ohana along the Waianae Coast.

With a new, reliable vehicle and generous support from Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Pizza Hut Literacy Fund, and Friends of Hawai’i Charities, Hawaii Literacy hopes to grow its route and bring books and a love of reading to even more ‘ohana and keiki. Last year, the program served over 1,000 children and parents and lent out over 15,000 books.

Milk + Bookies™ Read Aloud and Book Giveaway at Hawaii Literacy’s Family Libraries with Sunrise Rotary Club of Honolulu

Hawaii Literacy’s Family Literacy Program is teaming up with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Honolulu to provide new books and read alouds for children in Kuhio Park Terrace and Mayor Wright Homes. On select Friday afternoons starting in February 2011 until May 2011, youth participants of the Family Libraries will be treated to festive story times by local rotarians to foster lifelong learning and love of literature. Rotarians will enhance the read-alouds with book giveaways to ensure maximum literacy engagement for every participant. In addition to the read alouds and book giveaways, children will also be invited to eat cookies and milk with rotarians and reflect on the story shared.

Milk + Bookies™ is a non-profit organization that teaches young children how great it feels to give back while celebrating the love of a good book.

Orientation to the Adult Literacy Program

The Orientation talks about the problems of illiteracy (in our communities, our country, and the world), and describes the Adult Literacy program; there is also an opportunity to ask questions. For those interested in becoming tutors with Hawaii Literacy, there is a 16-hour training program. (The Orientation is REQUIRED for those who will be attending the training.)

The training program discusses strategies that can be used in working with an adult on his/her basic reading and writing in a one-to-one situation; the trainees are given an opportunity to practice the strategies; the recommended books are discussed and demonstrated. Please call Hawaii Literacy at 537-6706 for further information and to sign up for the Orientation.
