Classroom on Wheels
Description
The bookmobile (the "Classroom on Wheels") currently travels to six sites weekly providing families on the Waianae coast access to books and, hopefully, a life-long love of reading and learning. The Bookmobile visits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Waianae and Nanakuli, and the housing projects of Kauiokalani, Maililand and Ohana Ola O Kahumana I and II. The children can read and check out books; there are also books for young people and for adults. Each day there are also various literacy-related activities. The bookmobile is equipped with laptop computers for the children and/or their caregivers to use.
Volunteer
You can help improve literacy skills and school readiness on the Waianae Coast. Hawaii Literacy's Classroom on Wheels program visits housing projects and Boys and Girls Clubs there. Serving all ages, from young children to adults, the literacy minibus brings books, laptop computers, toys and activities to communities during weekly visits. Currently, site visits are weekday afternoons. Volunteers assist in literacy activities, read to children, and help adults and children check out books and use the laptop computers. We ask for a minimum commitment of one visit per week, for at least four months. A criminal background check is required.
